To provide engagement, information gathering and precision strike and rescue operations worldwide. The special operations team consists of Combat Controllers (CCT), Pararescuemen (PJ), Tactical Air Control Party members (TACP) and Special Operations Weather Technicians (SOWT).
Combat Control Mission
The job of a combat controller is to deploy undetected into combat and hostile environments to establish assault zones or airfields, while simultaneously conducting air traffic control, fire support, command and control, direct action, counter-terrorism, foreign internal defense, humanitarian assistance and special reconnaissance in the joint arena. Combat Controllers are Battlefield Airmen assigned to special tactics squadrons. They are trained special operations forces and certified Federal Aviation Administration air traffic controllers.
Combat Weather Mission
Special Operations Weather Team (SOWT) experts operate in hostile or denied territory to gather and analyze environmental information to forecast weather conditions for battlefield managers. Combat Weather Teams are organized, trained and equipped to provide meteorological and oceanographic intelligence information in and for the special operations theaters of conflict. Duties include tactical infiltration, observing, forecasting, training indigenous personnel to take limited observations and mission tailoring of environmental information while serving in forward areas or behind enemy lines.
These elite Special Operations members are dedicated to the rescue and recovery of injured service members from forward areas or behind enemy lines. Pararescue Jumpers are highly proficient swimmers, expert riflemen and masters of evasion techniques and land navigation that utilize these skills to treat injuries and rescue stranded individuals in combat, accidents and natural disasters. They operate in both humanitarian and combat environments, as well as serving in recovery support for NASA.
Tactical Air Control Party Mission
Tactical Air Control Party members are part of the Special Operations team that lives by the motto: "Advise, Assist, and Control". They diligently work at protecting America and its allies in the global war on terrorism. These specialists are easily identifiable as they have earned the right to wear the coveted black beret. They provide numerous critical functions on the modern battlefield, including advising ground forces on aircraft deployment and capabilities, coordinating and controlling aerospace operations, and participating in battle planning.
