The South Carolina Air National Guard was formed in December of 1946. The S.C. Air Guard was the first guard unit in the nation to be assigned the F-16 Fighting Falcon and continues to the fly and maintain the most advanced F-16 in the Air Force inventory. The 245 Air Traffic Control Squadron is also a part of the S.C. Air Guard and is co-located with the 169 FW. The Air Guard's Federal Mission is to provide well-trained, well-equipped units available for prompt mobilization during war and provide assistance during national emergencies. Under state law, the Air National Guard provides protection of life, property and preserves peace, order and public safety. These missions are accomplished through emergency relief support during natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes and forest fires; search and rescue operations; support to civil defense authorities; maintenance of vital public services and counterdrug operations.
