Major John L. Klatt
F-16 Pilot
18 years of service
Why I Joined the Guard:
I was just out of college and I wanted a career in aviation. I was not sure how to accomplish this and where to begin. After researching my options, I learned about the benefits provided by the Air Guard and how they could offer me the opportunity and skills that matched my career goals. After joining, the Air Guard sent me to pilot training right after I graduated from college. The Air Guard afforded me the opportunity to do so much in both military and civilian life. For example, I gained the skills to become an airline pilot. In addition, I am currently running the John R. Klatt air shows among other exciting duties. The Air Guard gave me the tools to succeed in both civilian and military life.
What I like Most About My Job:
My job is super exciting, dynamic and challenging, and I am able to serve my country! For example, I volunteered to go on my second duty to the Middle East in February for a combat mission in Iraq. Also, the air shows have a huge turnout and being able to travel around the world and see every continent is pretty exciting.
What My Future Holds with the Air Guard:
I hope to continue to fly F16s as long as possible and continue to serve my country and make a difference. My 20 year retirement begins in 2009, and the benefits are wonderful too.
