As a physician, what will I do in the Air Guard?
You will be responsible for the well-being of all our unit members. Each unit member requires a physical at least every five years; our flying personnel will receive an annual physical.
How do I become a flight surgeon?
You will attend the Aerospace Medicine Primary course at Brooks AFB, San Antonio, Texas. This course is six weeks long and the training is extensive. You will learn about aviation-related injuries and how medical problems can affect the body in flight. As a flight surgeon, you will be able to fly with your unit as a member of the flight crew.
What about the initial military officer training?
You will have to complete the Commissioned Officer Training course located at Maxwell AFB, Montgomery, Alabama. This is either a two-week or four-week course (your choice) and must be completed within one year of being commissioned in the Air Guard.
What is the age requirement for the Health Professionals in the Air Guard?
As a Health Professional, you can be commissioned up to your 47th birthday. Exceptions to this age requirement may be granted for physicians and other critical health professions.
What rank will I be appointed?
As a physician, your rank will be determined by several factors: relevant education courses completed, years of experience practicing and any prior military service. As a physician, your rank will be at least a Captain. For nurses and allied Health Professionals, your rank will be determined by work experience, licensure date and any prior military service.
