Anesthesiologist
An Anesthesiologist focuses on the care of surgical patients and pain relief. He or she confers with other physicians and surgeons about appropriate treatments and procedures before, during and after operations. The primary responsibility of an Anesthesiologist is to maintain a patient's vital life functions such as heart rate, body temperature, blood pressure and breathing through continual monitoring and assessment during surgery. The Anesthesiologist is a vital member of the Air Guard's medical team.
What Will I Be Doing?
To ensure a patient's safety throughout surgery, you will: Formulate plans and procedures for anesthesiological services. Advise on kinds and quantities of anesthesiological supplies and equipment. Schedule use and provide for maintenance of surgical suites, including operating, wash up and waiting rooms, as well as anesthetic and sterilizing equipment. Instruct personnel in methods and procedures for administering anesthetics. Administer general and local anesthetics. Determine anesthetics to be used, considering such factors as patient's condition and operation to be performed.
Experience You Can Use
As a civilian anesthesiologist, you can pursue opportunities in hospitals, clinics and practices that involve health care duties similar to those provided in the Air Guard. Other employers may seek your medical training and experience too.
CRITICAL CARE NURSE
Critical Care Nurse
Critically ill patients need vigilant supervision and sophisticated medical care. In the Air Guard, a Critical Care Nurse ensures that patients receive the best care available to help them through the recovery process.
What Will I Be Doing?
While creating a healing, humane and caring environment for the patient, you will also: Assess the patient's physical and mental state. Give prescribed doses of medicine. Help patients with therapy treatments. Monitor the patient's progress. Use high-tech equipment and procedures to treat the patient. Inform the patient's family of updates.
Experience You Can Use

What Will I Be Doing?
To provide urgent medical treatment, you will: Examine, diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries in the acute care setting. Provide immediate diagnosis and resuscitation care for life-threatening conditions, and direct the provision of such care in the pre-hospital setting. Organize and design disaster management programs. Work with disaster planning and hospital command personnel to design effective pre-hospital and initial hospital care and triage activities for disaster and mass casualty situations.

FAMILY PRACTICE
Family Practice
In the Air National Guard, we care for our members by providing Physicals and Annual Requirements. For these important tasks, we rely on a Family Practice Physician. As a top medical professional, he or she provides continuing, comprehensive health maintenance and medical care for patients of every age, gender and condition.
What Will I Be Doing?
As a Family Practice Physician, you will: Prepare and review medical histories and obtain data through interviews. Assemble triages and evacuate sick and wounded personnel. Examine patients, formulate differential diagnostics plans, and define and order required diagnostic testing. Interpret examination findings and test results, and implement treatment plans. Determine the need for consultation and assist in medical care and treatment provided by other specialists.

FLIGHT NURSE
Flight Nurse
Whether on an airplane or in a helicopter, a Flight Nurse plays a vital role in aeromedical evacuation crews. He or she is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care for all types of patients during air medical evacuations and airlift flights. The Flight Nurse also coordinates with and makes recommendations to staff agencies concerning air medical evacuation plans.
What Will I Be Doing?
Your role on the aeromedical evacuation crew will require you to perform the following: Provide in-flight nursing care for all types of patients. Deliver updates regarding changes in patient condition. Prepare plans to facilitate patients' enplaning, nursing care, comfort and safety. Evaluate individual patients' in-flight needs and request appropriate medication, supplies and equipment. Supervise enplaning and deplaning of patients, as well as off-loading of patient baggage, supplies and equipment. Brief medical personnel at the receiving medical facility on continuing nursing care and requirements.

General Surgeon
A General Surgeon examines, diagnoses and treats diseases and injuries using surgical and non-surgical means. While patients are under general or local anesthesia, he or she uses a variety of instruments to operate. Additionally, he or she is responsible for managing surgical services throughout the treatment center. The General Surgeon's expertise and extensive training is a huge asset to the Air Guard medical team.
What Will I Be Doing?
Your duties as a General Surgeon will include: Reviewing case histories and obtaining data through interviews. Examining patients and determining which clinical laboratory and X-ray tests are required. Interpreting test results and evaluating examination findings. Determining procedures for preoperative and postoperative care and conducting surgical procedures. Coordinating operations with anesthesiologist and administering and prescribing treatment.

INTERNAL MEDICINE
Internal Medicine
It's vital that Air National Guard members remain in top physical condition. Pilots must be alert and fit to navigate aircraft at high speeds and in potentially dangerous situations. Support staff must be in top condition to execute their duties effectively. The Air Guard relies on an Internist to ensure members' health through the prevention and treatment of diseases.
What Will I Be Doing?
To keep Air Guard members healthy you will perform the following: Diagnose and treat diseases. Prepare and review case histories and clinical records. Perform and direct diagnostic procedures, including X-ray examinations and clinical laboratory tests. Interpret test results and evaluate examination findings. Prescribe treatments, including drugs, physical therapy and dietary regimens.

NURSE ANESTHETIST
Nurse Anesthetist
When a patient requires surgery, a Nurse Anesthetist is the trained professional who administers the anesthesia. As a Registered Nurse, he or she is capable of assisting surgeons, anesthesiologists and dentists. He or she also provides patient care before, during and after surgery to make sure the patient receives the best medical treatment possible.
What Will I Be Doing?
While collaborating with surgeons, anesthesiologists and dentists, you will: Monitor and supervise the management of patient's preoperative experience. Perform preoperative evaluations and preparations. Administer anesthetics and monitor patient reactions to anesthesia and surgery. Advise anesthesiologists and appropriate physicians of adverse reactions. Manage fluid therapy. Provide or supervise postoperative recovery care, perform postoperative follow-up, patient evaluation and maintain records. Provide services or supervision in support of patients with respiratory care requirements.

OPERATING ROOM NURSE
Operating Room Nurse
The environment within an operating room is an extremely sensitive and highly regulated space. An Operating Room Nurse is responsible for planning, directing and coordinating both preoperative and postoperative surgical activities within Air National Guard ORs. The Nurse makes sure all the preparations and surgical operations adhere to medical standards to ensure a smooth and healthy experience for patients.
What Will I Be Doing?
Being an Operating Room Nurse will allow you to: Provide professional nursing care to patients undergoing surgery. Prepare and maintain the operating room for all surgical procedures. Monitor the operating room and equipment for conformity to all national standards to ensure safety for patients and personnel. Respond to surgical emergency requirements including cardiac, pulmonary and respiratory failure and hemorrhage. Conduct preoperative and postoperative visits. Discuss operative procedures with patients and inform them of what to expect before and after surgery. Coordinate with other hospital units on patient progress and any special equipment or supply needs for patients returning from surgery.

Orthopedic Surgeon
Air Guard personnel must be healthy and in good physical shape to fulfill their duties and complete physical training exercises. During the course of their service, injuries, sprains or bone breaks can occur. An Orthopedic Surgeon specializes in the treatment of the spine, bones, joints, muscles, or other parts of the skeletal system. He or she uses medical, surgical and physical therapy procedures to help their patients get back to duty.What Will I Be Doing?
As an Orthopedic Surgeon, you will: Examine, diagnose and treat diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system using surgical and conservative means, including the application of corrective mechanical devices. Prepare and review case histories and obtain data through interviews. Examine patients and request appropriate X-rays and clinical laboratory tests. Interpret test results and evaluate examination findings. Determine procedures for preoperative and postoperative care, such as administering sedatives, prescribing diets and preparing operative areas of patients. Apply surgical procedures and coordinate operations with anesthesiologists.
