167TH AIRLIFT WING

The 167th Airlift Wing of the West Virginia Air National Guard is an airlift unit that flies the C-5 Galaxy aircraft. For more than 50 years the wing has served the state and nation by providing outstanding capability across a variety of missions, beginning in its earliest days when it flew the F-51 Mustang and F-86 Sabre fighters. The unit has deployed to the four corners of the Earth in support of the Global War on Terrorism and continues to support this effort. The 167th's focus today, and in the future, is summed up in the unit's motto: "Mountaineer Pride Worldwide."

Education Benefits
Federal education benefits through the Montgomery G.I. Bill are available to most unit members provided they enlist for 6 years. These benefits are available to our members after completion of basic training and technical school. This program is a non-contributory benefit, meaning no payment or reduction in pay is required to receive these benefits. The Montgomery GI Bill chapter 1606; pays a monthly stipend to offset the cost of attending college full-time or part-time. Another education benefits for members enlisting for six years in a critical skills job is the Montgomery GI Bill kicker of up to $350 per month for full-time college enrollment. If you have prior military service and elected the active duty MGIB, you may still take advantage of this benefit up to a maximum of 48 months of combined benefits at the full-time rate.

The 167th Airlift Wing is located in West Virginia and is primarily involved in the C-5 Galaxy Mission.

C-5 Galaxy
The gigantic C-5 Galaxy, with its tremendous payload capability, provides the Air Mobility Command airlift in support of United States national defense. The C-5 mission includes carrying fully equipped combat-ready military units to any point in the world on short notice and then provide field support required to help sustain the fighting force.
