As an Air Guard health professional, you will benefit from the wide range of medical challenges presented by our diverse missions. You will learn military medicine and expand your horizons. You may find yourself in the middle of the action during a natural disaster, civil emergency, or homeland crisis – situations where your skills are critical and your character can make all the difference. Plus, you’ll have the satisfaction of helping your community and country when they need you most.
To be a Health Professional in the Air National Guard, you must possess a doctor of medicine degree or a doctor of osteopathy degree from an approved school of medicine or osteopathy. As a health professional, you can be commissioned up to your 47th birthday. Exceptions to this age requirement may be granted for physicians.
Virtually every career you can find in the civilian world exists in the Air Guard as well. This is especially true in healthcare, because the health and well being of our Airmen is critical to mission readiness. As a doctor, nurse, or other Health Professional, you’ll be treating not only Air Guard personnel, but their spouses and children as well. You’ll provide comprehensive care for families that includes preventive medicine services, behavioral health and community healthcare. You’ll also have the opportunity to formulate medical training programs and instruct both medical and nonmedical personnel on a variety of health-related topics.
It’s impossible to predict whether a crisis will occur at some point in the future. If it does, there is always the possibility you will be needed on deployment. The Air Guard is there to support the needs of the Air Force on an as-needed basis. Every effort is made to use volunteers first, but you may be tasked to deploy when volunteers are not available to meet the mission’s requirements.
