When military operations around the world need to get their communications up and running, the Air Guard Combat Communication mission makes it happen. This mission deploys, operates and maintains strategic emergency communications. It also plays a critical peacetime role during state-declared emergencies, this mission provides vital communications and other needed assistance.
The mission of a combat controller is to deploy undetected into combat and hostile environments to establish assault zones or airfields, while simultaneously conducting air traffic control, fire support, command and control, direct action, counter-terrorism, foreign internal defense, humanitarian assistance and special reconnaissance in the joint arena. Combat Controllers are Battlefield Airmen assigned to special tactics squadrons. They are trained special operations forces and certified Federal Aviation Administration air traffic controllers.

This intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) mission knows the enemy's location and activities. The Sentry and Surveillance mission tracks enemy behavior and movement, and decodes their communications to intercept their plans, strategies and resources.

After successfully mastering the required skills of this special operations mission, Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) Airmen earn the right to wear the coveted black beret.
